As an adventure elopement photographer, I get this question all the time. The truth is, your dress is probably going to get a little dirty throughout the day and that’s part of the adventure! But if you’d like to keep it looking its best until your ceremony and portraits, I have one simple wedding day hack that I recommend to almost every bride.

My Favorite Wedding Dress Hiking Hack

One item I absolutely love is the Bridal Wedding Dress Petticoat Underskirt ! You will be surprised! I know…it’s not exactly glamorous.

In fact, it looks pretty funny when you first pull it out of the package. But don’t let that fool you. This inexpensive accessory can save your wedding dress (and your sanity).

It Does More Than Keep Your Dress Clean

Even though its advertised for the bathroom, I think its the perfect item to have to keep your arms from getting tired and wear whatever dress you want! You never know might need to a quick bathroom break during the long hike! Don’t have to worry about your dress getting in the way!

Instead of carrying handfuls of fabric while hiking, you simply tuck the bottom of your dress into the underskirt and tighten the built-in drawstring. It gathers your gown and lifts the hem off the ground, helping protect it from:

Perfect for Ball Gowns and Full Skirts

Love the idea of wearing a princess-style gown in the mountains?

A full ball gown photographs beautifully against dramatic landscapes. The only downside is carrying all that extra fabric.

This little accessory makes hiking significantly easier because you’re no longer holding your dress the entire time. It keeps everything neatly tucked away until you’re ready to slip it off for your ceremony and portraits.

It Takes Less Than a Minute

One of my favorite things about this hack is how easy it is.

When you’re hiking:

1. Step into the underskirt.
2. Gather the bottom of your dress inside it.
3. Tighten the drawstring.
4. Enjoy your hike without dragging your dress behind you.

Once you arrive at your ceremony location, simply remove it and let your dress fall naturally. Your gown is ready for those breathtaking photos you’ve been dreaming about.

Don’t Stress About a Little Dirt

Here’s one thing I always tell my couples:

Your dress is meant to be worn.

Some dirt on the hem is completely normal during an adventure elopement, and honestly, it’s part of your story. Those muddy boots, dusty trails, and mountain hikes are what make your day uniquely yours.

The goal isn’t to keep your dress perfectly spotless all day. It’s to protect it until the moments that matter most and make your hike a little easier along the way.
