5 Things to Know Before Applying for Your Grand Teton Elopement Permit

Oh no… the questions have started!

Where do you apply?
How do you apply?
How many people can I bring?
Where can we have our ceremony?
Do we need a permit?
And, perhaps the biggest question of all…

Can we actually get married in Grand Teton National Park?!

If you’re dreaming of an elopement surrounded by towering mountains, alpine lakes, wildflower-filled meadows, and some of the most breathtaking views in the country, I completely understand why Grand Teton National Park is at the top of your list.

But planning a national park elopement can feel a little overwhelming at first. There are permits, ceremony locations, guest limits, seasonal restrictions, and a handful of rules you’ll want to know before making plans.

So, let’s break it down.

1. Know Your Guest Count Before Applying

One of the first things you need to know is how many people will be attending your ceremony.

Your group size doesn’t just include your guests. Grand Teton National Park counts everyone attending, including:

  • You and your partner
  • Family and friends
  • Your officiant
  • Photographer
  • Videographer
  • Planner

For small dispersed ceremonies, the group size is limited to 12 people or fewer. Larger ceremonies require a site-specific permit and must follow the capacity limits for that particular ceremony location.

Tip: Before applying, make a complete list of everyone who will physically be present during your ceremony.

2. Have Your Preferred Date, Time, and Location Ready

Your permit application will ask for your preferred:

  • Date
  • Ceremony time
  • Ceremony location

Before applying, spend some time researching which locations are available and which ones fit your vision.

Grand Teton has both site-specific ceremony locations and small dispersed ceremony options. However, not every beautiful location in the park is available for weddings.

Some popular areas are specifically prohibited for small dispersed ceremonies, including places such as String Lake, Jenny Lake developed areas, Hidden Falls, Inspiration Point, and the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve.

Important: Just because you can take portraits somewhere doesn’t necessarily mean you can hold your ceremony there. You can not say your vows either without a permit!

3. Apply Early and Be Flexible

Don’t wait until the last minute to apply for your permit. Although you can still apply for a small dispersed permit if you plan to elope last minute but know that your location may not be available.

Grand Teton National Park requires a minimum of 30 days to process wedding permit applications, and requests cannot be expedited. The park recommends planning ahead and considering seasonal conditions and closures. With that being said typically if its a small dispersed permit your like to hear back with then 2 weeks of submitting your permit.

Having flexibility with your plans can make a huge difference.

Before applying, consider having:

  • Your dream date
  • A backup date
  • Your preferred ceremony location
  • A backup location ( Have at least 3 locations that you would like to elope at)

For example, 2027 wedding and commitment ceremony applications are expected to open in December 2026, according to the National Park Service’s current guidance.

4. Understand What You Can and Cannot Bring

One of the biggest differences between a traditional wedding and an outdoor elopement is that Grand Teton National Park has strict rules designed to protect the landscape.

Before applying, know that certain items and activities are prohibited.

This includes:

  • Arches and altars
  • Rugs
  • Tables and tents
  • Large structures
  • Confetti
  • Flower petals
  • Balloons
  • Drones
  • Amplified music

Simple ceremonies are often the best fit for the park.

Your bouquet, vows, and the people you love are truly all you need when you have the Tetons as your backdrop.

5. Be Ready With All of Your Application Details

Before opening your permit application, gather all of your information.

You’ll want to have:

  • Names of the couple
  • Preferred ceremony date
  • Ceremony time
  • Ceremony location
  • Estimated number of participants
  • Estimated number of vehicles
  • Vendor information
  • A list of equipment you plan to bring
  • Contact information for the person in charge on the wedding day
  • Name of your photographer and officant.

The National Park Service also requires a $200 non-refundable application fee for wedding and commitment ceremony permit applications.

Once your permit is finalized, you must print and carry a copy of your permit during your ceremony.
